Alpha Mu Named IU's "Chapter of the Year" 2008-2009

At the end of the fall 2008 semester, the Alpha Mu chapter was named “Chapter of the Year” among all PHC and NPC sororities on the Indiana University campus. Many members on the executive board from the 2008 term represented our chapter in a formal interview process and all chapters were judged on the following: Academic Support, Philanthropy & Service, Brother/Sisterhood, Leadership Development, and Ritual. Alpha Chi Omega received the highest score in each category and thus won the “Chapter of the Year” honor.

The entire executive board, Chi Council chairwomen, and chapter member commitment to excellence and willingness to try new things in the spring and fall of 2008 were key for winning this award. We had constant support from our advisors and Housing Corporation Board to try new things, make a big impact in the community and thread our ritual through our college experience. As the Alpha Mu president for the 2008 year, I made it a personal goal to give 110% and be one step ahead in the aforementioned categorical aspects of our organization, and it was as a team and a great sisterhood that over the course of a year was able to achieve just that. I am proud of all the Alpha Chi’s who were a part of the great strides we have taken in the last year. We have worked hard and had a lot of fun in the process. Thank you all for your support, Alpha Mu is continuing to thrive well into 2009!

2008-2009 Little 500 Bike Team

The 2009 AXO Bike Team finished 20th after a grueling 100 laps of accidents, long sets, and hot track conditions. However, the team’s optimism and positive attitude was so apparent with smiles and cheers throughout the whole day!

The girls headed to Florida for a spring break training trip, where they dedicated long hours on the bike, to prepare for this years race!

Little 500 Season Memories:

Christy: “Attempting to jump on my bike in practice one day, and falling flat on my face because my spandex were
caught on my seat!”

Whitney: “Driving back from Atlanta, we were stuck in traffic, and the car in front of us was full of the Pike bike team, they had their convertible top down, and we were throwing Fig Newtons back and forth, everyone in traffic thought we were crazy!”

Julie: “After the race, standing with my teammates, looking up at the girls screaming and cheering our names and the obnoxious AXO chant, realizing it was all worth it!”

Audrey: “Doing really well in quals. It was such a fun weekend, and I was really proud of us as a team!”

Alpha Mu Places 9th in Little 50 Running Race

The Alpha Mu chapter took 9th place in Indiana University’s “Little Fifty” race on April 23. This year’s 7th annual Little Fifty race kicks off the infamous college weekend known as the Little 500. This running relay-race consists of 50 laps and a team of four runners. Runners endure training as they prepare to compete and qualify for the race.

This year’s Alpha Chi Omega team pushed through many obstacles from the start. With three rookies, Allison Karl (freshman), Kara Doerffler (freshman) and Nicole Dermond (junior) wondering what they had gotten themselves into, and a two year veteran, Ashley Miller (junior), doing the same, the energy and curiosity served as a driving force for the girls throughout their practices. Placing 8th out of 25 teams at qualifications simply ignited the girls’ energy and determination, only to find that a week later Karl was injured and would not be able to compete.

Scared out of their minds as the only women’s team attempting to compete in the race with three runners, Doerffler, Dermond and Miller took the track. With their sister’s squealing and chanting in the stands the three runners placed 9th. It was nothing like what they had expected and everything they could have imagined! Great job once again ladies!
